ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $12 million for high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) from Astana Regionalnaya Elektro Setevaya Companiya (AREK), the city’s utility provider. The order was booked in the second quarter.
ABB will supply 18 bays of 110 kilovolt (kV) and 16 bays of 220 kV GIS that will form an integral part of the Shygys and Dostyk substations, scheduled to be energized in June 2013. ABB has previously supplied similar equipment in 2010 for the Batys substation.
Astana became the new capital of Kazakhstan in 1997 and is the country’s second largest city after Almaty. It has been experiencing a construction boom as it strives to position itself as the premier city of Kazakhstan and Central Asia. One of the major infrastructure projects being executed to support this ambition is the construction of a 220 kV overhead transmission system with three supporting substations to provide the capital with a safe and reliable power transmission and distribution backbone.
“These new substations will facilitate the efficient and reliable supply of power to help meet the growing demand for electricity from industrial, commercial and residential customers catering to present and future needs as the capital grows” said Giandomenico Rivetti, head of ABB’s High Voltage products business, a part of the company’s Power Products division. “Our proven GIS technology will play a key role in supporting these substations and helping Kazakhstan build its power infrastructure.”
ABB pioneered high-voltage GIS in the mid-1960s and as a market leader, continues to drive technology and innovation, offering a full range product portfolio with voltage levels from 72.5 kilovolts (kV) to 1,200 kV. The compactness, low-weight and robust design features enable the equipment to be deployed in constrained spaces and harsh conditions to enhance grid reliability and efficiency with minimum maintenance needs.
Earlier this year, ABB introduced its latest generation of 420 kV GIS with a compact design that reduces volume by up to 33 percent and SF6 insulating gas requirement by as much as 40 percent, making it more environmentally friendly. This product launch is part of ABB’s technology and innovation focus and follows the recent launch of the advanced versions of the 245 kV and 72.5 kV range.
ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs more than 145,000 people.
